Our Health-First Breeding Philosophy
At Maine Coon Nest, our highest priority is the long-term well-being and health of our feline companions. We believe that producing exceptional Maine Coons begins long before a litter is bornβit starts with meticulous lineage selection, comprehensive DNA screening of our breeding kings and queens, regular echocardiogram monitoring, and raising every kitten directly in our clean, stimulating home environment.
Every kitten placed from our cattery comes with a binding written Health Guarantee contract designed to protect both the adopter and the kitten, ensuring total peace of mind and transparency.
Pre-Adoption Veterinary Care Protocol
Before any Maine Coon kitten departs our cattery for their forever home (at 11β12 weeks of age), they complete an extensive medical and preventive regimen under the direct supervision of our licensed veterinarian:
Initial 72-Hour General Health Warranty
We guarantee that at the time of pickup or delivery, your kitten is in sound physical condition and free from infectious, contagious, or communicable diseases.
Adopter's 72-Hour Vet Visit Requirement: The buyer agrees to have the kitten examined by a licensed veterinarian (DVM) within seventy-two (72) hours (excluding Sundays and national holidays) of receiving the kitten. This examination establishes a baseline health record with your veterinarian and activates the full terms of our 2-Year Genetic Warranty.
Comprehensive 2-Year Genetic & Hereditary Warranty
We guarantee your Maine Coon kitten against life-threatening congenital or hereditary genetic disorders for a period of two (2) full years (24 months) from the date of birth. Our breeding program relies on exhaustive genetic screenings via accredited veterinary genetics laboratories (including UC Davis VGL and Optimal Selection):
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) N/N Clear
Both parent cats are DNA tested clear (Negative/Negative) for the feline MYBPC3 A31P mutation. Furthermore, our breeding cats undergo regular echocardiogram screenings by board-certified veterinary cardiologists.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) N/N Clear
A hereditary neuromuscular condition affecting spinal motor neurons. All breeding queens and sires are tested N/N (non-carriers), ensuring kittens cannot inherit this condition.
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PK-Def) N/N Clear
An inherited erythrocyte enzyme deficiency that can cause hemolytic anemia. All parent lines are certified N/N normal with healthy red blood cell metabolism.
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) N/N Clear
An inherited condition causing cysts to form in the renal parenchyma. All breeding adults are verified free and clear of the PKD1 genetic mutation.
Warranty Remedy: In the rare event that a kitten is diagnosed with a fatal congenital or genetic defect by a licensed veterinarian within the 2-year warranty period, Maine Coon Nest will provide a replacement kitten of equal quality from the next available litter upon receipt and verification of clinical records and diagnostic imaging.
Adopter Responsibilities & Care Standards
To preserve the validity of the Health Guarantee and ensure your Maine Coon enjoys a long, vibrant life, the adopter agrees to the following standards of care:
π‘ Strict Indoor-Only Living
Maine Coons possess gentle, trusting dispositions that make them unsuited for outdoor hazards (traffic, predators, infectious pathogens, theft). Allowing the kitten outdoors unsupervised voids this warranty.
π« Strict No-Declawing Clause
Declawing is a surgical amputation of the cat's toe bones, causing chronic neuropathic pain, arthritis, and behavioral trauma. We strictly prohibit declawing. Declawing immediately voids all warranties.
π₯© Premium Nutrition & Hydration
Provide a high-quality, meat-first grain-free diet formulated for large-breed felines, along with fresh, clean filtered water daily (fountain recommended) to support optimal kidney and urinary health.
π Routine Veterinary Maintenance
Complete remaining booster vaccinations (including rabies between 16β20 weeks) and maintain regular annual wellness evaluations with a licensed veterinary practice.
βοΈ Spay / Neuter Agreement
For pet-quality kittens, the adopter agrees to have the kitten spayed or neutered between 5 to 8 months of age, as advised by your primary care veterinarian.
β€οΈ Safe, Enriched Environment
Provide appropriate scratching posts, tall cat trees suited for large cats, mentally stimulating toys, and a warm, loving, low-stress home environment.

We pride ourselves on honesty, compassion, and swift resolution. If you believe your kitten has developed a condition covered under this warranty, please follow these four simple steps:

- Minor Rehoming Stress Conditions: Mild transient diarrhea from dietary transitions or minor stress sneezing/upper respiratory irritation during initial adjustment.
- Post-Transfer Parasite Exposure: Parasites contracted after leaving our cattery (fleas, ticks, mites, giardia/coccidia contracted from outdoor soil, dog parks, or other household pets).

Lifetime Support & No-Shelter Commitment
Adopting a Maine Coon from our cattery is the beginning of a lifelong relationship. We are always available to answer questions about nutrition, grooming, growth phases, behavior, or veterinary care throughout your cat's entire lifetime.
Our No-Shelter Promise: If at any point during your cat's life you are unable to keep or care for them due to unforeseen circumstances, we ask that you contact us immediately. We will gladly take the cat back into our care or assist you in screening and placing the cat into a loving, vetted forever home. Under no circumstances should any Maine Coon Nest cat ever be surrendered to an animal shelter or rescue facility.
Frequently Asked Health Questions
What should I take to my kitten's initial 72-hour vet appointment?
Bring the complete health folder provided at pickup/delivery, including the signed Veterinary Health Certificate, vaccination and deworming administration dates, and microchip documentation.
How do I activate my kitten's microchip?
Your kitten arrives with a 15-digit ISO universal microchip already implanted. You will receive the registration packet with the unique ID number to register your contact information with the national pet registry.
When should my kitten receive their next booster shots?
Depending on their age at pickup (typically 11β12 weeks), your veterinarian will schedule their final FVRCP booster at 14β16 weeks, along with their Rabies vaccination at 16β20 weeks.
Can I transition my kitten to a different brand of food?
Yes, but we strongly recommend keeping your kitten on their current food for the first 10β14 days. If you choose to transition, do so gradually over 7β10 days by mixing increasing ratios of the new food to prevent gastrointestinal upset.
